Anger at fast NBN’s slow roll-out

By Laura Michell

Wyndham residents are being urged to voice their frustration at not being able to access the internet by taking part in a survey organised by Lalor MP Joanne Ryan.

In recent months, Ms Ryan’s office has been inundated with calls from residents concerned that the area has been left off the latest NBN roll-out maps.

Many frustrated callers are living in parts of Wyndham without ADSL ports being available.

ADSL access maps released by Ms Ryan reveal that no ports are available in large pockets of Point Cook and Tarneit, as well as in parts of Williams Landing, Werribee and Wyndham Vale.

She said it was not uncommon for her office to hear that residents were paying up to $100 a month for 10 gigabytes of internet because they could not access an ADSL port.

She said the only way to fix the problem was to ensure that Lalor was added to updated NBN roll-out plans. “Currently, this electorate is poorly serviced by the NBN. Under Labor, this area was scheduled to get world-class, fibre-to-premises NBN.

“Instead, our community has been largely ripped off the map by Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull, and most residents have no idea when the NBN will be coming to town and what kind of NBN it will be,” Ms Ryan said.

“Malcolm Turnbull promised that areas with the poorest service would be the first to get the NBN. This is not happening.”

NBN Co chief executive Bill Morrow said the roll-out was gaining momentum.

“More than 300,000 Australian homes and businesses across Australia are already connected and enjoying the benefits of fast broadband,” he said.

“Naturally, some people will be disappointed that they are not included in the latest rollout.”
