A pair of animal lovers behind a Point Cook charity that has saved the lives of more than 50 cats and kittens are hoping other locals will get behind their mission.
Purrs of Point Cook was hatched last November after Karin Dew responded to a call for a carer for a cat and her four kittens that were facing euthanisation.
What began as two foster carers – Ms Dew and fellow founder Leah Singh – and nine kittens has turned into 25 foster carers and about 50 felines.
“Most of the cats and kittens we get have been surrendered by owners who are no longer able to continue caring for the animal. We also receive many who have been abandoned or are strays,” Ms Dew said.
“Before they’re listed for adoption they are placed with already-screened foster families where they are socialised, treated and given lots of love and play time. That’s how we get to know the animal and figure out who their ideal family will be.”
All of the feline adoptees are vet-checked, vaccinated, wormed, flea- treated, microchipped and desexed before going to their new families, who are also screened. The adoption fee is $220, with a 30-day settling-in period.
