Australian International Airshow | Gallery 2 of 2

Tens of thousands of people attended the Australian International Airshow at Avalon Airport at the weekend.

The weather gods were reasonably kind to airshow goers and organisers on all three days. Forecast strong winds and rain stayed away during the displays on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but overnight rain created a quagmire along parts of the crowdline on Sunday.

Highlights included the RAAF Roulettes and Australian Defence Force showcase featuring aircraft including RAAF F/A-18F Super Hornets, C-17 Globemaster III and C-130J Hercules aircraft and the incredibly agile Australian Army Tiger attack helicopters in a simulated battle which also featured Army paratroopers and RAAF airfield defence guards.

F-16 fighters from the United States Air Force and the Royal Singapore Air Force Black Knights display team also showed their capabilities with stunning manouvres including the corkscrew climb with full afterburner that sees them rocket to 10,000ft in just three seconds.

Equally impressive where the gut-busting display by the Oris Immortals, a crazy three-ship aerobatic display feauturing US aerobatic champions Skip Stewart and Melissa Pemberton and Lithuanian legend Jurgis Kairys which ended with a massive wall of fire.

Vintage aircraft were also on show from original World War I fighters to World War II warbirds and early jets including the Gloster Meteor.

On the ground there were plenty of aircraft on static displays with, pilots and crews on hand to explain their role and what it’s like to fly them.

There was also a host of stalls featruring everything from the latest in aerospace technology to museum exhibits and displays showing how to build your own aircraft.

The Australian International Airshow returns to Avalon in 2017.
