A new chapter is being written in the life of the Tarneit Community Learning Centre as its new library is prepared for its unveiling later this year.
As part of the work, the existing centre is being expanded to accommodate the new $5 million library, 60 additional carparks and landscaped gardens.
Council employment, education and training portfolio holder Heather Marcus said the city’s fifth library would be home to thousands of new books, as well as DVDs, magazines and computers, spread across 1465 square metres.
“Libraries are such an important part of any community,” she said.
“Our residents, including a number of social groups, use library spaces every day to meet, read, relax or study.
“The new Tarneit library will ensure that residents have access to the wide range of resources that libraries have to offer, helping them to learn and grow.”
The former federal Labor government committed $1.1 million towards the library in 2013, but this funding was withdrawn by the Coalition government early last year.
However, in its 2014-15 budget last June, the council announced it was going ahead with providing $4.5 million to build the library on top of $750,000 from the state government, despite losing the promised federal cash.
The centre at 150 Sunset Views Boulevard, Tarneit, is open as usual during construction of the library.
