When the bell rang at Truganina P-9 College last Thursday morning, there were plenty of nerves – and not just for the pupils.
Opening its doors for the first time, the school welcomed 200 pupils from prep to grade 6, with years 7 to 9 to follow in 2016.
Principal Jenny Crowle said the Clearwood Drive campus would eventually be home to between 800 and 1000 pupils, with three teaching blocks for each of the junior, middle and senior classes.
Jessie Patterson, now embarking on her fourth year as a teacher, said it was exciting to be part of a new school.
“My mother was a teacher. I just love helping children to learn,” she said.
“I always wanted to be a teacher and to be able to see young people grow and develop, which is very rewarding.
“To have the opportunity to take children to a new place in their lives is a fantastic feeling.”
More than 900,000 students will attend Victorian schools in 2015.
