The Hillier View: Time for sensible debate

Weerama has struck a note, with many readers contacting me with their thoughts on the festival not going ahead in 2015. I agree this has been badly handled by a number of parties. But the finger pointing does no one any good, so I won’t get involved in that. I stand by my opinion that in its current form the festival is dead.

That’s an opinion shared by the Weerama committee and expressed in several emails I have received in the past week. The question remains: is there a future for a community festival of any kind in the City of Wyndham? I think the answer is yes, but not until there are funds to support it. I ask the council to be up front on Weerama and let everyone know the ins and outs. I think everyone involved would like a sensible debate.

C’mon and embrace this

I have always thought it a waste of time trying to do business with anyone in the new year until you get past the Australia Day weekend. Nothing has changed this year to make me feel differently. We are now officially back in business mode for 2015, and while that’s important, I’d love us city slickers to embrace a bit of what I encountered over the holidays.

We were having lunch at the Bass Hotel and when I was buying drinks, the bartender asked if I had 20 cents to round off the bill. I said no. Then came a voice saying “I have 20 cents, save you getting all that change. Here you go.” Really? Can you imagine that happening at a pub in Hoppers, Werribee or Point Cook? The City of Wyndham used to be known as ‘Werribee, the country suburb’.

Now we’re a city, we seem to have lost those country aspects of our way of life. Do you agree, and would you like to see those values back on display? I know I would.

‘Cakeage’ – really?

I understand every business needs to account for every cent. I also understand that every business is different and has its goals, but what’s ‘cakeage’ all about? We were going to be charged $6.50 per slice for a restaurant to cut up our cake and serve it to us. I’d have paid a standard fee, but $6.50 a slice was a bit rich. It wasn’t a local business, but I’m wondering if this is standard practice.
