Werribee Fire Brigade’s 100-year bash kicks off at Galvin Park

Firefighters from across Victoria will descend on Wyndham this weekend to celebrate Werribee Fire Brigade’s 100th anniversary.

The festivities kick off at Galvin Park on Saturday when 17 senior and 25 junior volunteer fire brigades will test their skills and fitness against each other and the clock as part of a two-day competition.

Events start at 9am on both days with firefighters to step back in time and use large hose reels based on those from the late 1800s and early 1900s.

On Saturday night, the brigades will join forces as the Werribee crew leads a torchlight procession down Watton Street from 8.30.

The march, beginning at the Comben Drive carpark before heading along Watton Street to the Wyndham Cultural Centre, will feature vintage and modern fire trucks, the RAAF Band, Werribee Concert Band, Hyde Street Junior Band, Victorian Ambulance Band and the Clans of the West Pipe Band.

Watton Street will be closed to through traffic for a short time during the procession.

After more than 53 years tackling fires, Werribee’s First Lieutenant Darryl Wells, the brigade’s longest-serving captain and father of current captain Michael Wells, encouraged residents to show their support.

“We urge Wyndham residents, their family and friends to come and see this once-in-a-lifetime event and help Werribee Fire Brigade celebrate its centenary year,” Mr Wells said.
