Police are warning drivers who are doing the wrong thing that they will be caught – as was a Tarneit man who was nabbed drink driving just minutes after police set up a roadside breath test outside Wyndham North police station last week.
Station staff and highway patrol officers set up the random breath tests on Sayers Road on November 19, testing 132 drivers in 40 minutes.
The fourth driver tested was a Tarneit man, 53, who returned a blood alcohol reading of .063. He was fined $430 and incurred 10 demerit points.
Sergeant Graeme Crouch said the fine should serve as a warning to other drivers.
“If you drive anywhere, any time and are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, it is only a matter of time before you are caught.”
Sergeant Crouch said Wyndham North police would continue to run random breath tests in Tarneit over the next two weeks as part of Operation RAID.
The statewide operation, which runs until December 7, aims to remove drug and alcohol impaired drivers from the road.
Road users can expect to be breath-tested, drug-tested and speed-checked during the operation.
Wyndham is on a list of 15 high-priority areas identified by police based on alcohol and drug-related road trauma levels.
Wyndham Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Darin Sheahan reminded drivers not to take risks with drugs and alcohol and to stay alert when driving.
“Fatigue is a major concern over the holiday period because many people drive long distances, so we’ll be closely monitoring our major highways,” he said.
