An Altona man who has applied for more than 200 jobs says all he wants for Christmas is an offer of work.
Anthony Ang and his wife Linda Yan are both out of work and supporting two children.
Mr Ang was a Melbourne University researcher for eight years before his contract ended last year. Unable to find a similar position, he decided to pursue his passion in web development and multimedia.
Already possessing a master of IT degree from Monash University, he last year completed studies in multimedia at Swinburne University to prepare for his career change. He also has web development and programming work experience and other relevant postgraduate qualifications.
Mr Ang said every day he applied for five to six entry-level or junior positions with low salary expectations.
“I find the job-seeking experience to be extremely difficult, draining and elusive. What is so demoralising is that although I got shortlisted for a considerable number of interviews and obtained very positive feedback, these always turn out to be false hopes.”
Ms Yan was a medical doctor in China with five years’ hospital experience, followed by five years with a large national pharmaceutical company. The family does not have the financial means to undertake a conversion exam which can take years to prepare for.
Since completing her certificate III in pathology collection last year, she has submitted numerous job applications but has had only one job interview. She is willing to undertake any type of work.
Mr Ang says he is desperate to get a job by Christmas.
