Police are warning people attending Thursday’s Werribee Cup to plan ahead to ensure they can get home from the track safely.
Wyndham police will mount Operation RAID (Remove All Impaired Drivers) with the aim of removing drug and alcohol-impaired drivers from the city’s roads.
They will be on the lookout for drink and drug drivers heading home from the races.
Inspector Frank Sells warned that drivers who chose to drink and drive would be caught.
“With large crowds expected to be travelling to and from the event, police are reminding those attending to be responsible behind the wheel and to respect others in public,” Inspector Sells said.
“Patrons intending to consume alcohol on race day are encouraged to consider their transport options for getting to and from the event. Consider using a designated driver or public transport.”
To help racegoers get to and from the event safely and reduce traffic, Werribee Racing Club will run shuttle buses between Werribee station and the racecourse between 11am and 6pm.
Inspector Sells said police would also be focusing on community safety throughout the day.
“We want patrons to enjoy the event in a responsible, respectful and orderly manner,” he said.
