An early start to this summer’s fire season has prompted warnings for Wyndham residents to prepare for the worst.
Werribee CFA’s First Lieutenant Darryl Wells said the community, particularly those on the city’s fringe, needed to be on high alert with conditions prime for fast-moving grassfires.
Mr Wells said significant grass growth over winter had dried out over the past few months.
“Grassfires have started earlier than usual. We typically see the conditions we’re experiencing now in late November or early December, so we’re about four weeks ahead of schedule,” he said.
“People need to take all of the necessary precautions to protect themselves by slashing their grass and clearing in and around their properties.
“One of the biggest issues we face is people who move out to Wyndham from the inner suburbs or the other side of town, and suddenly they’re confronted by the risks and dangers associated with grassfires.”
Last January, a grassfire burned more than 113 hectares at Little River, while the previous summer, properties from Balliang East to Melton South were placed on alert after a fire that started at Little River tore through 350 hectares.
Wyndham council has already sent letters to owners of vacant land reminding them to keep undergrowth cut to a height of no more than 15 centimetres and keep properties clear of rubbish and litter, or face potential fines.
A predicted hot, dry summer will mean grassfires are likely to start more easily and burn faster and with more intensity.
Mr Wells warned that many households were vulnerable.
“Many people are surprised by the speed and ferocity of grassfires, but they kill just as quickly as bushfires,” he said. “Wyndham has a significant fire history and everywhere from Little River to Wyndham Vale, Tarneit and Truganina is at risk.”
During Fire Action Week, which concludes November 23, CFA brigades are encouraging people to have their properties ready for the months ahead.
