Genevieve Cody will lace up her shoes and walk non-stop on November 22 to help raise awareness of human trafficking.
After hearing members of the Werribee Baptist Church talk about their experiences helping children who had been sold into slavery in Cambodia, Ms Cody decided to organise a Walk Against Traffick at Presidents Park.
The walk will raise money for Hard Places Community (HPC), which helps children as young as five who are being involved in human trafficking.
“When I learnt that HPC actually worked in Cambodia to rescue children, my heart broke for all the little lives being affected,” Ms Cody said.
“I was emotionally overwhelmed from thinking about how much I love my own son, but families in Cambodia seem to accept that selling their children is a normal part of life.”
Ms Cody is aiming to raise at least $1000 for the Hard Places Community to help it continue its work.
“I’ve never organised anything like this before. I’ve taken part in other fundraisers, but I don’t have the same emotional connection to any other cause,” she said.
“My little boy will grow up without fear of being sold and I believe that every child deserves that freedom.”
The walk is from 9am-7pm. Registration costs $25. More details are at: wat.melbourne@gmail.com
