Werribee has the chance to become part of a two-club breakaway at the top of Bowls Victoria’s division 1 section 2 ladder.
The Bees, along with Altona (2), are already a game clear of third-placed Melton.
They can extend that when they meet Melton in an early-season showdown at Chirnside Park on Saturday.
Bees skip Snowy Barker told Star Weekly newly promoted Melton was an unknown quantity, but results so far suggested it could prove a tough nut to crack.
“They’ve just come up from division 1, so it will be interesting to see how they line up,” Barker said.
“We’ll do what we do best and let them worry about us.”
The Bees return home after a fruitful fortnight on the road that saw them notch back-to-back wins.
Their away form has been superb this summer with a perfect three from three – a stark contrast to the misery experience on their travels in recent seasons.
They wore down Donvale on Saturday to claim a 94-80 victory after the rinks were split at two apiece.
Barker’s rink was the difference between the sides, although the 17-shot margin was not all plain sailing.
“We were up by about the margin we won by and then dropped about three or four ends in a row,” he said. “That put them within a shot.
“We were in a bit of a rut and it wasn’t helping the overall score. It was just a lack of concentration.”
Mick O’Neil was the other winning rink, up by six shots. O’Neil has been a mark of consistency over the first month, although that is not totally unexpected.
“He’s an experienced player,” Barker said. “He’s played state bowls, played in group sides and has won a few things.”
Jayden Christie’s rink went down by eight, while caretaker skip Peter Ware had a narrow one-shot loss that went down to the last end.
Ware filled in admirably for regular skip Rob Panton, who will bolster the line-up with his return for the big clash with Melton.
