Werribee has made a flying start to the Bowls Victoria division 1 season.
For the Bees, especially encouraging is their form on the road.
The Bees have won both of their games away from Watton Street – a big deal for a club that has historically struggled on foreign territory.
Away wins are great for the club, according to Bees skip Snowy Barker.
“After losing one at home last week, to pick one up away was real good,” he said.
The Bees didn’t just win – they hammered Elsternwick Club four rinks to zip.
Barker enjoyed the biggest margin of victory at plus-14 with Mick O’Neil (up 11), Rob Panton (up 5) and Jayden Christie (up 1) also winning.
“It’s not very often you get 18-zip,” Barker said. “It was very good to get all rinks up in an away game.”
Christie’s rink bounced back after two tough outings.
Barker praised the youngster’s determination to improve in his new skip’s role.
“It was good to see his rink get up, good for his confidence,” Barker said. “He’s pretty level-headed about it all – doesn’t get over-exuberant or anything. He’s taking it all on board.”
The Bees blooded another youngster, Dion Warnecke, in the Panton rink.
“Rob said he was steady for his debut,” Barker said.
He said it was all part of a club policy to “try a bit of youth, giving the bloke a go because he’s been practising hard”.
The Bees return to the greens on Saturday for another away battle, against Donvale.
Their task will be harder given the tougher level of opponent and the unavailability of Panton.
“They’ve [Donvale] been showing a bit of form and they’ll be a good test for us on the road,” Barker said.
Peter Ware will seamlessly fill the void at skip.
“He’s been playing bowls for 30 years at Werribee and skipped a lot,” Barker added.
Hoppers Crossing suffered a six-shot loss to Sunbury on the road in division 2.
Hoppers is winless after four games but will have a golden opportunity to break its drought when it hosts second-last Sunshine City on Saturday.
