Stayin’ alive: Tarneit resident teaching parents first-aid

Rachael Williams knows all too well the importance of teaching parents vital first-aid skills.

As an emergency first responder, the Tarneit resident has seen the difference that basic first-aid knowledge can make in an emergency.

To help more parents and carers learn what to do in an emergency, Ms Williams has begun offering first-aid classes.

The two-hour classes teach participants how to perform basic first-aid on children aged up to eight, how to help an unconscious child and how to manage different scenarios including drowning, choking, burns, asthma attacks, seizures, bites and stings.

Parents and carers also learn how to improve safety around their home.

Ms Williams said summer was the ideal time for parents to learn first-aid, with children likely to spend more time around swimming pools and water.

“I believe all parents should know these basic skills,” she said. “I have a true passion for first-aid, having seen the difference these vital skills can make in an emergency.

“I’ve had at least four situations where parents have come back and told me about incidents that have occurred after they have been to one of my courses, and they have had to do CPR on their own children. Having the confidence to step in has made all the difference for them.”
