Track and field athletes across the western suburbs converged on the Victoria University Wyndham Sports Complex for the opening round of the Athletics Victoria Shield on Saturday.
The two local clubs, Western Athletics and Wyndham Track and Field, enjoyed plenty of first-up success.
There were one-two finishes for Western in the open men’s division 1 100 metres, with Luke Stephens edging out Matthew Hargreaves, and in the men’s open division 1 1500 metres, with Chris Downie coming in ahead of teammate Callum Drake.
Daniel Bunworth won the men’s division 1 javelin with a throw of 45.54 metres, and Kylie Smith made it a Western double by winning the women’s division 1 javelin.
