Healthy Together grants make great fit in Wyndham

Grants of up to $5000 are on offer for programs aimed at improving the health of Wyndham residents.

A VicHealth survey found more than half the city’s adults are either overweight or obese and less than a third get enough exercise.

Wyndham council’s Healthy Together grants, funded by the state government, will give individuals and groups the chance to develop new ideas to promote better health and well-being.

Mayor Bob Fairclough said the grants were open to anyone living, working or studying in the city.

“You don’t have to be a health expert; you just need energy and enthusiasm about improving local people’s health with a great new idea,’’ he said.

‘‘We will assist you to develop it and to apply for the grant.

‘‘The aim is to get Wyndham locals involved in a range of different initiatives – activities like learning to grow vegetables at home, healthy cooking groups, quit-smoking support groups or a physical activity club.”

Two free workshops will be held this month to help applicants.

American community building expert Jim Diers will provide advice at a seminar in Werribee on Monday.

And an innovation and grant-writing session will be held in Hoppers Crossing on October 24.

Applications close on November 2.

To book for the workshops, or for more details, phone 9742 0777.
