Would-be Werribee ATM thieves dash without cash

Hapless thieves left empty handed after a ram raid in Werribee early on Tuesday.

Police said the two thieves crashed a stolen utility vehicle into the IGA store on the corner of Ballan and Bulban roads just before 4am in an unsuccessful attempt to steal the shop’s ATM.

The stolen vehicle became wedged between surrounding bollards, prompting the two men to flee the scene.

The impact caused significant damage to the store, smashing windows and damaging a front door frame.

The men ran from the store. It’s believed they then left in another utility parked nearby.

The incident is being investigated by Wyndham police’s crime investigation and burglary units.

Detective Acting Sergeant Chris Black said it was clear the offenders were attempting to steal the ATM.

He said the first vehicle had not been stolen from Werribee but was believed to have been taken from a nearby suburb.

He said police were appealing for witnesses.

Anyone with information is being urged to call Werribee police on 9742 9444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
