Nineteen members of the staff of Werribee High School have come out publicly in support of the principal, Mr A Swan, over his stand in regards to transferred music teacher, Mrs M Wazna. Of the 19, eight are first and second-year teachers and all feel they are sick and tired of the distortions by the striking teachers and want to put the record straight.

A row between a Werribee councillor and members of the local branch of the Labor Party has spread into the Legislative Assembly. On Tuesday last week, Werribee MLA Dr Ken Coghill told Parliament a Werribee councillor was a “politically motivated stranger to the truth”. The claims made in Parliament followed an outburst at a recent council meeting by Cr Glen Clark against members of the Werribee and District Community Health Centre committee.

Werribee farewelled Laverton last Saturday when the suburb officially became part of the new City of Hobsons Bay. The area included in the handover is bounded by Old Geelong Road, the Laverton RAAF base, the railway line and the Princes Highway.

Security measures at Werribee Mercy Hospital’s psychiatric unit have been called into question following the escape of an illegal immigrant earlier this year. The man, an Italian national, was transferred from Maribyrnong Detention Centre for treatment as an involuntary patient in late August after he allegedly went on a hunger strike. He escaped within days of being admitted.
