Almost 2500 residential street lights across Werribee, Hoppers Crossing and Wyndham Vale have been converted to energy-efficient LED globes as part of the Lighting the West project.
Last year, Wyndham council received a grant of almost $2.5 million from the federal government for the project that will convert 21,656 street lights across Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Moonee Valley.
A further 9650 street lights across Wyndham will be switched over in the next 18 months, with the changeover to reduce Wyndham’s greenhouse gas emissions by 84,000 tonnes.
Wyndham council’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder, Peter Gibbons, said the switch would save Wyndham $21 million in the next 20 years through reduced electricity usage and maintenance costs.
“By providing brighter, more energy-efficient street lights there will be environmental, social and financial advantages,” he said.
“The LED street lights last longer, require less maintenance and cost less to run, resulting in lower operating costs. They are also brighter, improving community safety.
“With Wyndham leading the way in making energy and financial savings, we are also inviting residents to do the same.
“We have a number of energy- efficiency workshops coming up and our soon-to-be-launched website will feature advice on upcoming events and ways residents can save.”
The next stage of the project will begin later this year.
