If you see Les Porter riding his bike around Wyndham in the next few weeks, give him some food for thought.
This Saturday, the Hoppers Crossing resident departs for the fifth time on his custom-made tricycle for a month-long 1000-kilometre journey around Wyndham.
So far he has raised $50,000 for Wyndham City Salvation Army’s community support services.
Mr Porter’s enthusiasm for the cause knows no bounds. His life was nearly ended 27 years ago when he was hit by a car while crossing a Yarraville street. He spent 18 days in a coma and his wife was told he might never walk, talk or work again.
Despite an acquired brain injury, which left him with limited mobility down one side of his body and a brace on one of his legs, he returned to work and has become an active and inspirational member of the Wyndham community.
Wyndham City Salvation Army community support services manager Sue Brookshaw said the food drive, kick-started by local resident Bob Metselaar, would help cater for people in need in the lead-up to Christmas.
Mr Porter will leave Werribee Plaza Shopping Centre at 10am on Saturday. Call 9731 1344 for details.
