Manor Lakes residents lose push to be a suburb

Manor Lakes residents have lost their bid to have the estate recognised as a suburb.

Wyndham council received a petition from the Manor Lakes Residents Association in September last year calling for the change from Wyndham Vale, despite the use of estate and commercial titles – such as Manor Lakes – not complying with state government naming guidelines.

In June, the council referred the request to the Office of Geographic Names (OGN) seeking an exemption to the guidelines, but this was denied.

A report presented to last Monday’s council meeting revealed the OGN wrote to the council last month acknowledging community support for the name change and the association’s 1050-signature petition, but it ruled the principles of the naming guidelines were “fundamental in ensuring public safety, provision of emergency services and the delivery of goods and services”.

Iramoo ward councillor Peter Maynard said he was stunned by the decision, saying there was already a secondary college, medical centre and street signs carrying the Manor Lakes name.

He encouraged the community to continue its campaign.
