Wyndham’s rich history will be put in the spotlight during a family fun day to mark the municipality’s 150th anniversary.
The event, at the Wyndham Civic Centre on Sunday, October 12, will chart Wyndham’s growth from a sleepy country town in 1864 to a bustling city.
Mayor Bob Fairclough said the centrepiece of the event would be an exhibition of Wyndham’s history, featuring an interactive display outlining the key events that have shaped
the city.
“Many in our community will know the Chirnside family were a pivotal force in shaping the area, but they may not know that Hume and Hovell came through the Werribee district on their way to Corio Bay in 1924, or that the Wyndham Racing Club was established in 1878,” Cr Fairclough said.
“Another interesting fact is that Bungey’s Hole, a bend in the Werribee River, was once used for swimming carnivals.”
The celebration will also feature horse and carriage rides, old-world games, face-painting and a walk along the Werribee City Centre Heritage Trail. Wyndham libraries will provide a family history service.
