Cakes a recipe for a cure at Iramoo Primary School

Pupils at Iramoo Primary School have been enjoying sweet treats this month to raise money for childhood cancer research.

Throughout September, the school has been selling cupcakes made by parents to promote the work done by the Kids’ Cancer Project.

The project is one of the largest funders of childhood cancer research in Australia and is currently funding 13 research projects.

Principal Moira Findlay said the school was showing its support for the project because it had two pupils being treated for cancer.

“The school community has really got behind cupcakes for a cure,” she said.

“Each day, the cupcakes go on sale at 10am and are sold out by 10.50. I’ve been overwhelmed and humbled by the generosity of the local community.”

The school has raised $1500 so far and Kids’ Cancer Project director Col Reynolds says the money will help fund more research.

“Over the last 21 years, I’ve looked into the eyes of so many children with cancer and promised them I would dedicate my life to finding a cure,” he said.

“I won’t ever give up and that means we need more funds for more research.

“The quest to find cures for childhood cancers is one of medicine’s greatest success stories.

“Fifty years ago only 2 per cent of children with cancer survived.

“The figure today is approaching 80 per cent.”
