“The Board of Works, Melton Sewage Authority and the Environment Protection Authority between them would turn Werribee River into a main sewer,” is the claim of Frank Purcell, president of Werribee Conservation League. Added to the threat from Melton was the prospect of effluent from two new residential areas west of Werribee being discharged into the river.

Roads and land in Werribee were flooded on Wednesday night when vandals opened the floodgates at the off-take structure for the main irrigation channel. A flood of
30 million litres of water surged down the irrigation channel before the flood gates were closed by State Rivers and Water Supply Commission staff.

Comben’s Supermarket in Station Street will be sold to Morgans Tuckerbag next month. The supermarket has been managed by the Comben family since it was founded 97 years ago.
