Point Cook Town Centre gets $20 million revamp

Shoppers at Point Cook Town Centre will have more stores to explore, with the centre soon to receive a $20 million revamp.

The redevelopment will add specialty stores – and Point Cook’s first Woolworths supermarket – to the centre.

Developer Stockland, which owns the centre, says the redevelopment will begin next February and be finished by mid-year.

The 25,000-square-metre centre opened in late 2007, with construction costing $100 million.

The redevelopment will focus on the centre’s south-west corner, along Dunnings Road and Boardwalk Boulevard, which is now occupied by Harris Scarfe and Best & Less.

The work will not increase the centre’s floor space, with Woolworths to be built where Harris Scarfe and Best & Less are located.

Both stores will cease trading on January 12 next year to allow the redevelopment to begin. It’s expected it will create about 100 jobs.

Stockland commercial property design and development manager Jane Lloyd said the redevelopment would cement the centre’s position as Point Cook’s premier shopping destination.

“Point Cook Town Centre is in one of Melbourne’s fastest-growing population corridors, so we are pleased to undertake this development and deliver a centre that will serve the needs of this growing community,” she said.

“We know the importance of a strong fresh food offering and are pleased to include a new Woolworths for our customers at Point Cook.

“The redeveloped centre will further enhance the current retail mix, which includes Coles, Target, Aldi and Dan Murphy’s, as well as 199 specialty stores.”

Centre manager Frank Pizi said the redevelopment would cause little to no disruption to shoppers.

“We are very excited about this redevelopment and the opportunities ahead,” he said.

“We are continuing to work with council, the local community and our other partners to build a great retail offering that meets the needs of residents, now and into the future.”

Point Cook Town Centre is the second shopping centre in Wyndham to receive a major redevelopment, with work starting on a $370 million expansion to Werribee Plaza earlier this year.

The Derrimut Road shopping centre upgrade is expected to be finished in late 2016 and will be renamed Pacific Werribee.

Its redevelopment is expected to create 750 construction jobs and 1200 permanent jobs when finished.
