Tiffany Wasnig can’t think of a better way to mark Anzac Day than by standing on the Turkish shores where Australian and New Zealand troops fought in 1915.
The Heathdale Christian College year 10 student is one of 80 Victorian high school students chosen to attend the 2015 Anzac Day dawn service at Gallipoli to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops at Anzac Cove. More than 630 students applied to be part of the occasion.
Tiffany says she nominated for the six-day tour to Turkey because Anzac Day has always had a special place in her heart.
Since the age of six, Tiffany has been a regular attendee at dawn services and Melbourne’s Anzac Day march.
“Anzac Day has always been special to me,” she said. “I go to the dawn service to mark past family members’ involvement in war. [Going to Anzac Cove] will be amazing.”
To nominate for the trip, Tiffany needed a letter of recommendation from her school principal, Reynald Tibben, and was required to demonstrate a connection to her community and understanding of the spirit of Anzac Day.
Mr Tibben says Tiffany, who volunteers with the Salvation Army, Friends of Rotary and Brainwaves – a support group for children and families affected by neurological conditions – will be a great ambassador for the school.
