Pupils at Truganina South Primary School won’t miss out on the most important meal of the day thanks to the generosity of Wyndham’s Sikh and Hindu communities.
About 50 pupils from various backgrounds are being provided with breakfast at school after Australia India Welfare and Cultural Society founder Jasvinder Sidhu started a breakfast club late last year.
The club provides pupils with breakfast from Tuesday to Friday.
The group was already helping Open Family to serve food to homeless children in Wyndham but began running breakfast clubs in schools after the council helped it identify seven schools in need.
Mr Sidhu also runs breakfast clubs at schools in Noble Park and Collingwood.
He said sharing with others and helping people in need was a major part of his culture.
“Retired and isolated Indian seniors who meet at the Sikh temple wanted to find something constructive to do, so they started cooking for homeless children,’’ Mr Sidhu says.
‘‘Usually food gets overstocked and we wanted to mobilise this stock for those who need it most … so we started arranging breakfast. The concept of sharing with all is a core strength of Sikh and Hindu cultures. This is done irrespective of a person’s faith, race or nationality.”
Mr Sidhu said the breakfast club relied on the generosity of businesses such as KD Ahuja Real Estate in Hoppers Crossing and Angad Institute of Technology, while Wyndham’s Hindu community provides the school with milk.
