“An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is exactly the message one Werribee South farmer is trying to spread.
Sachi Rudolph used to work as a personal trainer and lived in Southbank before moving to Werribee South with her farmer husband two years ago.
Since then she has set up a fruit and vegetable shop, FarmFresh2U, where people can buy produce directly from the people who grow it.
Children are even encouraged to visit the Rudolphs’ farm and try healthy food for free.
“The kids get to come down and see the process and how we grow all the healthy fruit and vegies,” Ms Rudolph says.
“I want to supply our local community with fresh produce and educate them on what they’re eating at the same time.”
But now Ms Rudolph is taking her healthy mission to another level, sharing food for free with people who can’t afford it.
Every week she donates left-over fruit and vegetables and as much as other farmers in the area are willing to give to OzHarvest, a charity that distributes fresh produce to people in need all over Melbourne.
Last week alone, Ms Rudolph donated close to one tonne of fresh and healthy food.
“We take so much for granted here in Australia and I think people turn a blind eye because they don’t see the poverty,” she said.
“People who are struggling deserve quality and healthy food, too. They shouldn’t have to eat scraps.” While she is working on getting other Werribee South farms on board, Ms Rudolph says her dream is to make her mission an international movement.
