Plastic tactic a winner for Werribee Racing Club

A new approach to track treatment means Werribee Racing Club’s last meeting of the season is set to go off without a hitch, according to the club’s interim chief executive.

Jon Dight told Star Weekly the club had recently introduced a new technique that meant the track would recover from a day of races better.

“The track is looking terrific,” Mr Dight said.

“The club, in conjunction with Racing Victoria, has done an over-sow program where we’ve mixed plastic fibres into the grass … this has helped the root system to grow stronger.”

Mr Dight said the final race meeting of the season would be held on Sunday, June 15 before the club started to focus on the flagship Werribee Cup, to be run on Thursday, November 20.

“We’re confident that we can schedule all of our planned race meetings and that the track will recover really well,” he said.

“We’re excited about getting some consistency going and for Werribee to be a really strong club into the future.”

Mr Dight was announced as the interim chief executive of the Werribee Racing Club after Ross Kendell resigned as chief executive at the end of April.

Mr Dight has previously said that he expected a full-time replacement for Mr Kendell to be named by the end of July.
