The Werribee Racing Club’s bad luck is well and truly behind it, according to the man who will take over the reins short-term.
Jon Dight was named as the club’s interim chief executive after Ross Kendell announced his resignation last month.
Star Weekly revealed that Kendell would be leaving Werribee to focus on setting up his own business.
Dight said last week Kendell had since agreed to stay on as manager of the international quarantine centre, which is run as part of the club.
Dight, who will retain his post as chief executive of the Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club, said that he would hold the top Werribee position for three months and focus on making the club more connected with the Wyndham community.
“All race clubs have got their challenges,” he said. “Werribee has had its fair share of bad luck and hasn’t been able to put on consistent meetings.
“We just need to concentrate on making sure [the track] is ready to go for the next meeting and that it’s ready for the Werribee Cup in November.”
Dight said he expected a full-time chief executive would be appointed in time for the Werribee Cup on November 20 and that he would remain at the club in an advisory role.
“We’ve done extensive work on the track with binding agents and it has held its profile really well,” he said. “We just need a little bit of luck to ensure that everything goes as planned.”
