With a nickname reminiscent of a cartoon character, it’s no wonder Werribee’s Jose “Pepe” Bascunan spends his days sketching cartoons.
Over the years, Mr Bascunan has dedicated his time to developing his signature cartoon character – a kangaroo wearing a cork hat and overalls.
The character, along with his beloved dog, wife, daughter and son, spend their time visiting community events and discussing local news.
Before moving to Werribee about four months ago, Mr Bascunan had his comic strips published in the Shoalhaven and Nowra News, a weekly community newspaper published in New South Wales.
He said drawing the kangaroo was a way to keep up with what was happening in the community.
“He is always about the news with his family.”
Mr Bascunan, who moved from Chile to Australia in 1973, said his passion for drawing began in school.
“I was about 10 years old when my teacher asked me to copy an image on to the board. I was told it was good and that I should draw more. Since then I have liked drawing.
“Then, I worked in a refinery in Chile where I would sketch my friends.”
“When I came to Australia, I said to my son I wanted to draw a cartoon and he helped me come up with the kangaroo.”
