Director Vince Mastroianni started the business in Swan Street,
Richmond, after he and his wife took over a business called Sweetheart Car Rentals. The name stayed, but things definitely changed.
Mastroianni sold the Richmond premises in 2001, moving closer to home in Werribee and adding more than 40 cars to the fleet.
Fellow director John Merganovski, the former director of a Toyota dealership, brings 20 years of experience to his role.

There are many aspects of the business, including car rentals and sales, short and long-term rental and a ‘‘rent to own’’ program.
This latter program combines the costs of financing and owning a car into weekly payments over a year. This includes insurance, warranty, registration and roadside assistance.
“We focus on tailoring a plan to individual needs and budgets,’’ Merganovski says. ‘‘In one case, a client was renting a car for over a year and we tailored a plan to switch her into a car that she would own.”
The service doesn’t stop once you walk off the lot. Sweethearts has a workshop in Werribee to ensure their cars and customers are looked after. Customers can also trade in vehicles including jet-skis, boats, caravans or motorcycles.
