A monster performance from Aaron McCuin helped lift Werribee to a vital away win against Hawthorn in state championship men’s Big V basketball on Saturday night.
McCuin was outstanding for the Devils, putting up a double-double to finish with 28 points and 19 rebounds as Werribee won 81-79.
After losing its last four games, Werribee was intent on stopping the streak and made the most of its chances in the opening term.
The Devils shot more than 50 per cent from the field and 40 per cent from beyond the three-point line to take a three-point lead into quarter-time.
The margin was extended to five by half-time and it looked as though an upset could be on the cards.
However, playing in front of their home fans at the Boroondara Sports Complex, Hawthorn hit back in the third quarter.
The Magic put up 29 points and restricted Werribee to just 19, turning a five-point deficit into a five-point lead.
But the Devils had one last charge in them, powering home in the final quarter to secure a two-point win.
Aside from McCuin’s dominance around the ring, the Devils were also well represented by Jordan Hughes and Rustin Dowd, who each finished with 16 points.
The good news continued for Werribee the following day.
The Devils made it two wins in less than 24 hours with a 33-point victory against Melbourne, 88-55.
