A Truganina resident claims there is a “land-locked island” of home owners who face delays of up to 30 minutes to turn from side streets into Leakes Road.
Ash Aly, a stevedore manager in Footscray, said the situation had been made worse with the banning of right-hand turns on the recently sealed Marquands Road.
Mr Aly said cars forced to turn left from Marquands Road to Leakes Road frequently executed dangerous U-turns across high-speed traffic.
“Someone will be hurt – we need traffic lights or we need to be able to turn right from Marquands Road to Leakes Road to get to the city,” he said.
Mr Aly said some residents were using “rat runs” such as Botanical Drive, which allows right turns into Leakes Road, but they faced a half-hour wait as traffic queued.
“Between 7am and 9am there can be a hundred vehicles in Botanical Drive wanting to turn right into Leakes Road,” he said.
“It’s a headache for the residents in that street and for residents in the area generally it is unacceptable.
“The whole area is congested, we feel trapped. Work has been going on in Marquands Road for three years and when it was recently re-opened we thought we would get relief.”
