NEW DOG LAWS (Weekly, November 20)

It is a shame this attack occurred, but if leading canine experts around the world admit visual identification of a breed is almost impossible, who knows what type of dog this was? The proposed laws don’t do anything to make the community safer. Laws must be put in place to educate owners and restrict ownership, and we shouldn’t just blame a dog that may look like it ‘could’ be a problem.

ANGII ROTBLAT \ VIA WEB

Where is the proof that it was a ‘pitbull’? [Agriculture Minister Peter] Walsh’s new ideas will not reduce attacks – only education, training and responsible ownership will. The new amendments will only prove to be more costly for responsible owners, while the irresponsible ones will still hide and go untouched.

NIKKI ASHTON \ VIA WEB

Who is the breed expert who identified the dog as a ‘pitbull terrier’, even though there is no such breed? An American pitbull terrier is a breed, but it’s not recognised in Australia. Breed bans have not been effective in reducing bite and attack statistics. This is a Band-Aid plan so the government looks like it’s doing something about dog attacks. Get with the program and stop this rubbish about certain dog types being “inherently dangerous”.

LABOR PLEDGE (Weekly, November 20)

The Werribee Street level crossing will have only a few infrequent freight trains running through it after V/Line trains are removed with the completion of the Regional Rail Link. Regular passenger services will not return until the Werribee line is extended, which is probably at least 10 years away as it would require the capacity freed up by the metro tunnel.

RAYRAY \ VIA WEB

Typical hypocrisy from the ALP. They had a decade to fix these rail crossings and did nothing. Now that they are in opposition, they suddenly pretend that they want to do something. The ALP always promises the world but never deliver anything except debt, debt and more debt.
