Werribee’s Jimmy Cupples won’t let a torn tendon stop him doing his bit to raise awareness of the dangers of diabetes.
Cupples, who this year was a contestant on The Voice, will run eight kilometres around Melbourne’s Tan track on Sunday as part of the Take Steps for Good Health festival, despite tearing a tendon in his foot last week while training for the event.
The event encourages people to reduce their risk of developing diabetes by slowly increasing their exercise levels.
Cupples became involved on the advice of a friend. “I like the idea of taking small steps for good health. We don’t have to be fitness fanatics and we don’t have to change our whole lives.
‘‘We just have to say, ‘I am going to eat a little bit less and get a bit more exercise’.”
Cupples hopes Sunday’s festival makes people more aware of the risks associated with diabetes.
“I had a couple of friends who are overweight and were diagnosed with diabetes and my father, who is 73, was told he is borderline. He’s started eating a little bit less and lost weight, and that has put him into the safe category.”
