Rows and rows of roses await admiring eyes

Werribee’s most eye-catching floral displays will be in full bloom for next month’s first State Rose and Garden Show.

More than 100 volunteers are preparing Werribee Park’s State Rose Garden for the December 1 event, which will include stalls, exhibitions, live music and tours.

Victorian Rose Society president Veronica O’Brien said the free event was designed to showcase the garden and increase its profile statewide.

“The garden isn’t as well known as it could be,” she said.

“Other states are more aware of it than the locals.”

In 2003, the State Rose Garden was the first outside Europe to receive the International Garden of Excellence award presented by the World Federation of Rose Societies.

Cr Peter Gibbons said the State Rose Garden was “one of the gems and crowns of Werribee” and agreed it deserved to be better known.

“It’s an ideal setting. You couldn’t get better,’’ he said. “It’s a real family day with a lot to do and a lot to see.”
