Wyndham business owners are being urged to give their staff time off to attend the Werribee Cup on Wednesday, November 13.
It’s the first time in several years the cup has featured on the spring carnival calendar and Werribee racecourse manager Ross Kendell wants locals to make it a winner.
“It doesn’t have to be the whole day [off work], but there’s a lot riding on local support,” he said.
Next Wednesday’s eight-race event will feature fashions of the field, live music, children’s entertainment, and corporate marquees in the centre of the track.
“I’ve listened to locals who told me how great the [Werribee] cup used to be when it was a qualifying race before the Melbourne Cup and would routinely get 15,000 [spectators],” Mr Kendell said.
“The marquees in the middle are back, there are mini-marquees and the home-straight car park, where people can drop off their picnic lunches for a social event in their own spot. There’s the trackside reserved area less than 50 metres from the finishing line and the racecourse dining room.”
A bus will shuttle racegoers to and from the railway station in Watton Street.
Mr Kendell said the date of the meeting had changed every year recently, including a December event in 2012.
But it had now won support from Racing Victoria and Country Racing Victoria as a spring event to improve its standing.
