YOUR VOICE: October 10-16

COMMUNITY CABINET (Weekly, October 9)

Asking Terry Mulder to fix public transport is like asking Dracula to fix low blood supplies

As far as I can remember, the Williams Landing station was part of the development plan for the subdivision and, as such, was approved under the previous government. But a safe Labor seat will always attract the bare minimum, minus 10 per cent, under Labor and the bare minimum, minus 20 per cent, under the Liberals for infrastructure funding.

Please, don’t put Werribee in the new suburb’s name. I live in Werribee and I am proud of that, but there’s a negative stigma attached to the name. People think of bogans, the sewage farm and the smell when they think of Werribee. Having Werribee in the name could be detrimental in trying to lure large businesses here. The suburb should be named Chirnside. That sounds friendly, projects an image of trees and waterways, and is named for the Chirnside family who had such a large influence in the city of Wyndham.

The ALP never invested in our community and has always treated us with contempt. Only the Coalition has boosted public transport, and it built Williams Landing.

Wyndham’s problems are the result of a dysfunctional council that failed to plan for growth and is now blaming the state government for its own shortcomings. There are developer contribution plans out that will pump more than $1 billion into infrastructure for the area – not to mention the new $100 million Williams Landing train station, two new train stations at Tarneit and Wyndham Vale as part of the
$5 billion Regional Rail Link, more than $70 million for a new freeway interchange at Sneydes Road and associated road works, and a new employment precinct that will generate more than 58,000 jobs.

JOHN SYMMONS \ VIA WEB

With unemployment expected to rise and our economy slowing, we don’t need all these new people or a new suburb. It doesn’t matter what name is attached to this ‘new’ suburb; planning in Melbourne is out of control and is actually being deregulated for the sake of property developers.
