Under the Bed: A refuge from family violence

A Point Cook independent film company is preparing to launch a crowd-funding campaign to finance a short movie on domestic violence.

Writer Tony Hooper, of Thorium Films, said Under the Bed would be about the horror of family violence, told from a child’s perspective

“The title even reflects the loss of innocence these kids suffer,” he said.

“[Being] under the bed, for many of these children, is not a place to fear monsters but is instead a sanctuary for them to flee to, a place to hide from a cruel and unforgiving world.”

Hooper said he was inspired to write the film after hearing football identity Phil Cleary, who has campaigned to stop violence against women since his sister was murdered by her former partner.

“It’s a sad truth, domestic violence is widespread in our community,” Hooper said.

“From every walk of life, experts have said you will know someone who inflicts it upon their loved ones.

“I want to tell a story about the all-too-forgotten victims and convey the horror that children endure within their own homes.”

Director Byron J Brochmann, who has worked on The Pacific, X-Men: Origins, and TV show House Husbands, said the film company planned to take Under the Bed to festivals worldwide.

Under the Bed will open up our views on a life lived with violence and the effects it has on everyday children,” Brochmann said.

“It will dive into the lives of other families that may be nothing like our own.”
