Manor Lakes residents want recognition

There’s a lot of name calling going on in the Manor Lakes estate and residents are lobbying authorities to put an end to it.

Residents, real estate agents and even VicRoads’ directional signs refer to the area as Manor Lakes, but officially it is part of Wyndham Vale.

More than 1000 people have petitioned Wyndham council to recognise Manor Lakes.

Manor Lakes Residents’ Association president Cedric Young said there were three VicRoads signs pointing to Manor Lakes.

Resident Peter O’Connor said changing the name would end the confusion.

He said the estate was separate from the centre of Wyndham Vale and was known by everyone, except the council, as Manor Lakes.

“It is advertised by agents as Manor Lakes and people bought here thinking it was Manor Lakes, but when they want to get a letter they have to say it’s Wyndham Vale.”

In a letter to the council, Mr Young said the council and government had reinforced the belief the estate was called Manor Lakes through numerous references to the area and its facilities by that name. He said even Planning Minister Matthew Guy, in June last year, said Manor Lakes was one of six new outer-area suburbs.

He said the estate was built on land that for more than 100 years was known as Manor Park.

Local clubs and facilities using that name included Manor Lakes football and cricket clubs and the Manor Lakes shopping centre.

“Manor Lakes is commonly known and accepted as being an area name and we feel that with Regional Rail Link nearing completion, the name for the area and station should be formalised as Manor Lakes,” Mr Young said.

The petition is being assessed by council officers.
