Rainfall lifts Wyndham bushfire risk

Wyndham firefighters are preparing for another busy season as experts warn of above-average bushfire risk this summer.

The Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre’s early-season outlook,
released this month, reveals that above-average winter rainfall has
encouraged grass and crop growth.

Little River CFA captain Terry Hedt said an abundance
of crop growth could become a breeding ground for fires if not properly
managed.

“People need to make sure they have the necessary permits from the
council for burnoffs and do them before it gets too late,’’ Mr Hedt
said. “Old grass is dry on top, and that is where a fire will carry in the right wind.”

The brigade has started fire-management training sessions and has
completed a few burnoffs. It will carry out more planned burns before
the fire season starts in November.

Mr Hedt said last summer was the busiest fire season for “many, many years”.
