Werribee Park is using two very different teams of hunters to get on top of a pest problem.
Rabbits are invading the park’s gardens, eating and digging up new plants and flowers in the historic garden beds.
Ranger in charge James Brincat said traditional methods such as
burrow blasting were unreliable, so Parks Victoria has invited Sporting
Shooters’ Association members into the park at night to shoot rabbits in
the State Rose Garden and the park’s outer paddocks.
It has also called on a group of Karen boys and their pet ferrets.
The boys, including Bee Bee See and Htee Keow (pictured), and their
ferrets have flushed out more than 80 rabbits in recent weeks.
A similar project is being planned for Point Cook Coastal Park.
