Safety, security boost to reopen Laverton North motocross track

Motocross enthusiasts will have a safe place to ride after Wyndham
council voted to rebuild a Laverton North track that has been closed
since 2010.

The council will spend $265,000 to improve safety and security at
the Lawrie Emmins Reserve track after fears were raised about the
increasing number of trail bike riders using the reserve illegally.

Police regularly carry out blitzes to educate and fine users amid
concerns someone will be seriously injured. Community groups had also
asked the council to reopen the circuit.

A recent survey of interest groups and residents living near the
reserve found 68 per cent of respondents would use the track on a recent
basis.

Over the next two months, council workers will install fencing and a control barrier, and clean up the site.

Councillors also voted at last Monday’s council meeting to lease out management of the circuit.

A report on management options will be presented to the council early next year.

The council has consulted Motorcycling Victoria about the work that would be required to make the track compliant with its standards.

Cr Glenn Goodfellow said he hoped reopening the track would put an
end to illegal riding and reduce the amount of rubbish being dumped at
the reserve.

“[The track] is a haven for illegally dumped rubbish and naughty
shenanigans . . . when the motocross facility was previously in use,
illegal riding was significantly reduced,” he said.

“Reopening it means people can ride and learn to ride in a safe manner.

“There is clear support for a facility where parents can teach
their children to ride motorbikes and that caters for a wide range of
abilities, including beginners.”
