When Werribee’s Stephen Bartlett and Lillian Landy went into early retirement, they decided to volunteer to help others.
After searching for the right cause tosupport, they came across Wyndham’s meals on wheels service.
They immediately thought it was the kind of volunteering they
would enjoy, so they signed up to help deliver meals to the city’s
elderly residents.
Two years later, Ms Landy said they enjoyed providing a valuable service to the community.
“We provide a service that money can’t buy,” she said.
“For some people, we are the only people they see. They look forward to our visits.”
Mr Bartlett and Ms Landy are among the Wyndham meals on wheels service’s 50
volunteers, providing meals to 350 elderly residents, people with
disabilities and their carers each month. The service also has five
full-time staff.
The program allows people to remain living independently for as
long as possible, with meals available on a short- or long-term basis.
Mr Bartlett and Ms Landy deliver meals to low-dependency clients at least once a week.
“We love it. We enjoy meeting new people,” Mr Bartlett said.
“It is such a worthwhile project. I would encourage
others to get involved because it is important to look after our ageing
community.”
The contribution made by Mr Bartlett, Ms Landy
and other volunteers will be recognised today as part of National Meals
on Wheels Day.
