More women will be able to give birth at Werribee Mercy Hospital, with its maternity intake to be increased by 20 per cent.
The hospital has received extra state government funding, allowing
it to hire more obstetricians, midwives, anesthetists and nurses.
The funding boost means an extra 450 women can give birth at the hospital this financial year.
Mercy Public Hospitals executive director Linda Mellors said it
was expected 2680 babies would be born at this hospital this year.
“We are already receiving bookings to fulfil the higher number of birth this year,” she said.
“Our most pressing priority is to increase maternity services
access so that more women from Wyndham can choose to give birth
locally.”
Plans to increase Werribee Mercy’s maternity services were flagged
earlier this year after it was revealed the hospital was turning local
women away.
