WERRIBEE may not have got the four points against the Magpies in
the VFL on Saturday, but for Tiger fans there is plenty to be confident
about heading into their third consecutive finals series.
The Tigers secured a finals berth a week earlier with a convincing
win against Northern Blues, so only a gigantic loss to Collingwood
could have dropped Werribee from fifth spot.
“We probably knew where we were going to finish unless we got
absolutely blown out of the water,” said coach Scott West after the loss
to the Pies.
Werribee will need to win three finals if it is to make a grand
final – something it hasn’t done since 2005. The past two seasons have
brought heartbreaking preliminary final losses. But there is much to be
optimistic about. The Tigers have arguably the most versatile forward
set-up in the league, with four players having kicked 20 or more goals
in the regular season.
Add to that a strong midfield and a resolute defence – the Tigers
have conceded more than 100 points only once since May – and Werribee
must be counted among the contenders.
