Ferry to Avalon bid faces approval hurdle

A PROPOSED ferry service to Avalon Airport will need the approval of Transport Minister Terry Mulder before setting sail.

Lyons Capital, the company behind Werribee South’s Wyndham Harbour
development, is in talks with the airport about a ferry service from
the Mornington Peninsula to Avalon.

Planning is in the preliminary stages but Lyons Capital says the ferry could be part of a wider network of Melbourne services.

The developer is already in talks with the state government about running a ferry from Werribee South to the city.

But a spokeswoman for Mr Mulder said the proposal was
not part of the government’s study into the feasibility of operating
ferries in Melbourne and, as such, would need to gain approval to
operate.

The spokeswoman said the government was not considering an Avalon
ferry service as part of the study because it was “focused” on planning
for a rail link to the airport.

Lyons Capital spokesman Greg Miller said the company believed the
ferry was a good idea because it would be an attractive alternative to
congested roads.
