WOMEN, disconnected communities and migrants will be the focus of a new Wyndham council strategy to encourage residents to get active.
As part of a leisure strategy approved by councillors on July 22, the council will spend $1.55 million over five years on leisure-related events, marketing, capital works and neighbourhood-specific projects for culturally and linguistically diverse communities and to encourage greater participation by women.
The council will expand walking and cycling trails and develop new events, open space and leisure facilities.
Cr Peter Maynard said the strategy would help women, migrants and less fortunate residents access leisure activities.
The latest Victorian Population Health Survey revealed 74 per cent of Wyndham residents don’t participate in incidental physical activity such as walking or cycling to schools, train stations or shopping centres.
Cr Maynard said the strategy would also encourage residents to leave their car at home by promoting walking and cycling.
